The Bronx High School for Visual Arts (BHSVA)
is a unique school working to help Bronx youth become creative and responsible citizens. BHSVA was founded in 2002 by educators, artists and local activists with support from New Visions for Public Schools. It is a small high school open to all Bronx residents and specializes in providing an extensive four year sequential study of the visual arts taught by professional artists. BHSVA offers a close-knit community with hands-on, arts integrated curriculum.
BHSVA is well known for our outstanding success in art education. In 2004 the school was recognized by the Department of Education's Project Arts as an "exemplary arts school" (we are the only high school in the Bronx with this distinction). On October 30, 2006, Mayor Bloomberg awarded BHSVA principal, Dr. George York and the school, the distinguished Mayor's Art and Culture Award.
BHSVA is conveniently located just south of Pelham Parkway near the number 2 and 5 train Bronx Park and Morris Park and the BX 22 or BX 39 bus. Our new facilities include a library, Apple Computer Lab, one ceramic and one general art studio. School meetings and physical education classes are conducted in our multi purpose room. Our campus does not include outdoor sports fields or a gymnasium. However, students interested in playing high school sports may participate at Columbus High School, located about 1 mile away.
Our small class size and project based, student centered curriculum provides individualized attention and prepares students for college, successful completion of Regents exams and for careers in the visual arts. An integral part of the school is the support and participation of student's families in all facets of school life.
