January 2006 and 2007, BHSVA art teachers were selected to
designed and teach NYC Department of Education’s Region 1 and
2 Blueprint Professional Development Workshop for Technology
and Art Instruction. Each year over 40 Bronx art teachers attended.

An exhibition of student photography from BHSVA’s Image Griots
Partnership will be held at the Bronx Borough President’s Office in
May 2006

BHSVA was recognized for their success as a new small school in
the cover story of EDUCATION WEEK, June 23, 2004.

BHSVA was designated a “leadership school” by the Center for Arts
Education for the school’s excellent Student Docent Program at the
Bronx Museum. A video documentary was produced in 2007 to
demonstrate the promising practices and success of the students
in the program.
     
 
 
 
Dr. George York, BHSVA’s principal, was one of the authors of
Project Arts Blueprint, the current curriculum for city wide arts
instruction.

Sine Bayar, special education teacher and Joel Key, art and music
teacher received a Fund for Teachers Grant to develop a multi
disciplinary project to explore Contemporary Japanese Art. Joel
also was awarded a fellowship by Toyota to extend his stay in
Japan to study Japanese Culture and History.

Eric Miles, artist and BHSVA founding art teacher is well know
among the city’s art education community as a “master” art
teacher, former Professor at Pratt Art Education Department and
Fine Arts Pre-College Program, a professional muralist, and former
program director of Groundswell, a non-profit mural organization. A
recognition of his skills and talents as an artist and teacher, Eric is
a Blueprint Instructor and a judge for the city wide Deadalus art
scholarship award. Eric is also co-author of city-wide arts curriculum.
Carol Sun, BHSVA art teacher, is an accomplished artist and
designer. She has shown widely and received numerous awards.
Sun has had one person shows at the Bronx Museum of Art and
Neuberger Museum at SUNY Purchase. She is also former faculty
member of Parsons School of Design and the Cooper Union. Recently
Carol was commissioned by the MTA to design a glass
mural artwork for 167th Street Train Station which will be completed
by Summer 2006. She was recently selected to be a
member of the Bronx Museum Art Education Committee. This
winter, Carol was commissioned by Wave Hill to make work for
their Holiday exhibition. Her 167th Street station proposal artwork,
Bronx Reflection, will be on displayed at the exhibition Bronx
Bound at Lehman College Art Gallery through May 16, 2006. Her
work was included in two recently published books, City Art: New
York’s Percent for Art Program and Collection ReMixed, a catalog
of the Bronx Museum’s Permanent Collection. In 2007 Carol was
awarded a Digital Matrix grant from the Bronx Council on the Arts.
In May 2007, she was a distinguished panelist for the Dana Foundation
symposium ““Transforming Arts Teaching”. My panel, “View
