Students receive in-depth instruction in the arts throughout their education at BHSVA. In addition to fostering authentic achievement in the traditional core subjects, our students take studio art classes for all four years. In their freshman and sophomore years, engage in a two-year foundation sequence (Introduction to Studio Art and Advanced Studio Art) that exposes them to a wide array of artistic materials and methods. Then, they use those experiences and their own interests to choose an arts sequence in their junior and senior years. Junior and Senior electives include Digital Media, Photography, Sculpture, 3D Design Lab, Digital Portfolio, Ceramics, Portfolio, the Bronx Museum Docent class, and Music in the Arts. The integration of portfolio development and college and career prep into these classes results in graduates who are ready to enter art colleges, technical schools, or a career in the arts as productive, thoughtful, and creative human beings engaged in a critical relationship with the world.
9th Grade Introduction to Studio Art
Welcome to art at BHSVA! In this course student projects will include individual and collaborative art making and student presentations on artists and color theory. Projects will introduce students to the fundamental skills and techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, bookmaking, photography and an introduction to computer graphics. Outside of class students will be responsible for keeping a sketchbook.
10th Grade Advanced Studio Art
The focus of Advanced Studio Art builds upon the ninth grade course, expanding students’ skills and experiences, and preparing students for their art electives in junior and senior year. Students continue to focus on observational drawing, color theory, and a mix of traditional materials and new technology/digital media such as digital photography and Adobe Photoshop. Students gain an understanding of their own creativity, our contemporary culture and global communities by creating and analyzing their own artworks, reviewing works by their peers, and interacting with professional visiting artists. Outside of class students will be responsible for keeping a sketchbook.
Bronx Museum Docent Class
This course is for juniors, by teacher recommendation only, who are interested in developing their portfolio and learning how to give tours and plan exhibitions at the Bronx Museum for the Arts. BHSVA received a two-year grant from the Center for Arts Education in 2002 to establish a pilot docent program. Since then, the Bronx Museum Docent Program has successfully grown into a year-long course that prepares students to make real world connections through two major events: leading the school community on a tour of a Bronx Museum exhibition, and planning/implementing a thematic exhibition of student artwork at the museum. Via hands-on fun, the Docents improve their critical thinking skills, expand their literacy in the arts and communication, and learn how people express themselves as individuals, communities, and as art makers. Since 2002, over 50% of Docents have been awarded scholarships to prestigious pre-college or after school art programs and internships.
Photography
In this yearlong course students will develop skills and technical proficiency that will enable them to produce good quality, creative photographs that explore multiple photographic techniques. Students will learn about the historical developments in the field of photography and will gain an appreciation for the work of innovative photographers. Students will have the opportunity to contrast new and old technology as they explore digital storytelling and photography as an art form and a means of communication in today’s society.
Digital Media
Based in our networked 27 computer Apple eMac lab installed in 2006, students learn the history of typography, concepts of advertising and the basics of layout design. Students will experience how to get an idea from conceptualization to a finished product using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Flash. Students will gain understanding of the role of advertising in our culture and communities by creating and analyzing their own artworks, reviewing works by peers, and studying work by professional designers. Students will explore type, identity, color, books logos and symbols. Class projects will include visual design exercises, digital storytelling, printed two-dimensional pieces and creation of an electronic portfolio.
Digital Media Portfolio
This course prepares students for fine arts colleges and the digital media industry through a series of challenging assignments and independent projects. Using photography, internet research, and scanners in our eMac computer lab, students prepare a college entrance portfolio.
Sculpture and Ceramics
This course exposes students to the fundamentals of 3D design, sculpture, installation art, and ceramics. Students explore a variety of materials and methods including plaster casting, paper relief sculpture and hand constructed wheel thrown pottery, which we then fire in our 2 on-campus kilns.
Design Lab
The Design Lab elective class will be offered to all students who have successfully completed our two-year studio art foundation sequence. This one semester course will build upon students’ foundation experiences and help each student to develop as a sculptor or designer of architecture, fashion, products, automobiles, or textiles. The class will study different materials, methods, concepts and history of design by creating unique 3 dimensional artwork. In addition, we will visit design studios, shops and colleges. Students are required to complete a sketchbook and create an intensive project that will culminate with a formal professional presentation (model, sketches, collages and essay).
Portfolio
This course is for select senior students who will apply for admission to art, architecture or design colleges. Students will receive intensive support and guidance to apply to a professional art or design college. They will create an admission artwork portfolio that can be used for college admission and will be completed by early January.
The portfolio will consist of:
(6) High quality artworks that use Direct Observation.
(6) High quality artworks that represent the student’s unique expression or interests.
(1) Sketchbook of 40-60 drawings from Direct Observation
All artwork will be mounted on black board and labeled clearly and neatly.
All artwork will be digitally photographed and published in a CD.
All students will be required to:
1. Work independently to complete (8) College Worksheets
2. Work independently on their artwork in school and at home
3. Attend National Portfolio Day in November
4. Attend one open house at Parsons or Cooper Union
Parents are highly encouraged to attend all BHSVA PTA workshops on Senior and College Actions, and to take their child to visit their first and second choice colleges.
Music in the Arts
Music in the Arts is an art and music class that incorporates the Urban Music Workshop, a hands on digital music program that was founded by the Rockefeller Music Fund, Pepatian and BHSVA. As participants, students learn the history of hip hop, jazz, funk and soul, as well as basic techniques, concepts and skills to digitally author their own audio youth culture with Oxygen-8 digital keyboards, Garage Band, and Reason music production software in our eMac computer lab. Visiting professional DJs and Sound Engineers provide concrete connections to the music industry and the “how to” needed to attain music careers. |
